When their notoriously stingy landlord, Mr. Peters, suddenly announces three months of free rent for Sarah and her roommates, the group chat erupts in celebration. Maya, Tara, Chloe and Lily can already see the money piling up, and none of them question the gift from a man who once charged them ten dollars for a guest's water and electricity.

Only Sarah refuses to celebrate. A landlord who counts every penny does not hand over thousands without expecting something in return, and his insistence that everyone be home tonight to sign the addendum chills her. She packs her bags, ready to abandon her five-thousand-dollar deposit rather than stay, but her roommates block her way, furious that she might ruin the deal for all of them.

Before Sarah can escape, the doorbell rings. Mr. Peters arrives with expensive desserts and a thermos of bird's nest soup, smiling as he pours a bowl for each of them.
