After their father remarries, Sunny and her older brother Caleb are cast out of the house. Their stepmother Helen cuts off their money, has Caleb suspended from university and sabotages every job he finds. Desperate, Caleb decides to collect protection money from Julian Vance, a wealthy student at A University.

In a back alley they find Julian already beaten by thugs. Caleb pretends the attackers were his own men and demands payment, stepping on Julian's hand. But Sunny sees strange floating text revealing Julian's true fate, and terrified of what it foretells, she offers him her last lollipop and begs Caleb to stop. Julian takes the candy, and when the police arrive with a girl named Bella accusing Caleb of extortion, Julian quietly tells the officers the siblings were only helping him.

Sunny knows the danger is far from over, and that Julian's cold gaze hides a future she is determined to change.
