Instead, every deed goes to his younger brother Leo, and Arthur claps, declaring he supports the decision completely. Clara is left seething as her mother-in-law insists the eldest son must yield and later carry the burden of their care.
At home Clara demands answers, but Arthur only asks whether she trusts him. He offers no explanation, no anger, nothing. Then, late one night, she catches him in his locked study, speaking quietly on the phone about paperwork being processed for both of them.

On the vintage dining table sat a teapot, a bowl of sunflower seeds, and a stack of property deeds.
Seven of them.
They were bound in red leather with gold lettering, stacked right in the center of the table.
My father-in-law sat at the head of the table. He coughed twice and cleared his throat.
"I called you all here today for one reason."
"The properties. It's time to distribute them."
