From the back cover
After six months at sea, Logan returns home expecting his wife's pork rib soup, but finds Sophia Merkin, seven months pregnant, sitting on a worn-out sofa. The refrigerator holds only half a jar of ketchup and a bag of expired, bug-infested pasta. When he demands a hot meal, Sophia shows him WhatsApp records: his mother Bethy Moore has sent her just 100 dollars a month for six months, while he transferred 20,000 dollars home every month. Bills, unpaid prenatal forms and a gas shutoff warning lie scattered on the floor.
Sophia tells him she cannot go on, and Logan vows to get the money back. He takes a taxi to Bayville, where Bethy lives in the furnished apartment he rented for her. Through the half-closed door he hears laughter, lobster and wine, and Bethy boasting that 19,000 dollars went to Joseph Patterson that morning.
Logan kicks the door open and reads Bethy's transaction history aloud, finding five years of transfers to the Patterson family. Selina Patterson sneers that Sophia deserves nothing but bug-infested pasta.

At that moment, my six months' worth of exhaustion, frustration, and pent-up anger from the roiling…
