When her daughter Elise Dolton falls ill, a mother rushes to the run-down apartment Elise shares with three college roommates. The moment she steps inside, a rotten stench hits her, yet no one else seems to notice it. When she offers to clean, the roommates turn hostile and Elise snaps at her to stop making a scene.

That night the smell proves to come from Elise herself, and no amount of scrubbing fades it. The mother's attempt to hire a cleaner ends in a shove, a fall, and her death — only for her to wake again at the doorway, the stench rushing back.

Given a second chance, she hides perfume, smoked mackerel and blue cheese to test the household. The roommates smell the hidden food at once, but never the odor clinging to Elise. As her gentle offers of a deep clean are met with fury, she begins to suspect the apartment holds something the others will not let anyone find.

Her roommates' faces dropped right away.

"What smell, Mrs. Dolton? The place is fine."

"If you think it's such a dump, then have Elise move out. Don't come in here acting like you're better than all of us. We're not putting up with that!"

Even Elise shoved me impatiently. "If you’re here to visit, then just act like it. Stop making a scene and embarrassing me, okay?”

They were all college roommates, splitting rent on a run-down unit in an old complex.
