On a night of torrential rain, a young woman is abandoned on the side of the road by her fiancé, Nate Sterling, who leaves to comfort Chloe, his childhood friend who claims to suffer from severe depression. A stranger in a Range Rover pulls over, offers her his umbrella, jacket and a ride home, and curses Nate's cruelty. She wakes the next morning with a high fever.

Nate comes to apologize, insisting Chloe's episode was an emergency he could not ignore. To her, it is the final proof that she will never be his first choice; from seventeen to twenty-five she has watched him drop everything for Chloe, even falling asleep in the same bed with her. Calmly, she tells him she no longer wants to marry him and that they should break up.

Nate dismisses her words as anger, tends her through her illness and speaks of a wedding by the end of the year. Her parents, once opposed to him, warm to his attentiveness. Yet as her fever lingers, she pulls her hand from his and asks what will become of Chloe if they marry.

As I stood there, completely drenched and shivering, a Range Rover pulled over in front of me.

A tall, incredibly muscular man stepped out of the car and held an umbrella over my head.

"With rain this heavy, what on earth are you doing out here, miss?"

My eyes drifted first to his prominent, muscular chest pressing against his shirt, and then slowly up to his face.

And then, I burst into loud, ugly tears.
