Ginny Vine is a love therapist, paid to let clients experience what it feels like to be loved. When a gentleman in his early thirties books a private room and requests her specifically, the store manager Luke Smith warns her that the client has brought tools of his own. Ginny braces herself for strange fetishes, only to find the man kneeling before her, offering the toys up and begging to serve as her most loyal knight.

She names him Marshmallow, after a dog she once had, and steps on his back, orders him about and sends him out for bubble tea with a vibrator inside him. For the first time at work, she is the one in control, and the feeling of power is addictive.

When the hour ends, Marshmallow refuses to be abandoned: he books her schedule for the next month, begs for her number and sends her money. Ginny knows this client will be a long-term one, but she cannot tell how far his obsession will take them both.
