From the back cover
After ten years missing, Harper Ellison is found so badly frightened that her soul has slipped loose from her body. Granny Agnes Forrest says Harper's spirit needs forty-nine days to settle, and that the memories of the sister who was taken in by the Ellisons must burn as lamp oil to see her through.
So the drainings begin. After the first, Sophie forgets she is allergic to shellfish and eats the shrimp her brother Grayson Ellison puts on her plate. After the twentieth, she forgets how to act sweet and needy around her parents. After the fortieth, she forgets to wait up for Grayson at night. On day forty-nine, the last one, Grayson brings her soup and tells her the debt is paid, that they will treat her as their real sister now.
But Sophie has forgotten who she is. She offers him a single coin for the soup, bows, and calls him sir, and the family that took her in finds itself facing a stranger wearing their daughter's face.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
She needed my memories to burn as lamp oil. Forty-nine days, start to finish, before Harper Ellison's spirit would finally settle.
The first time they drained a memory from me, I forgot I was allergic to shellfish. I ate the shrimp my brother Grayson Ellison put on my plate and went into shock, straight into the ICU.
Mom and Dad sat in the next room over, watching cartoons with Harper. They said the sound of my monitors was too loud, so they shut the door.
After the twentieth draining, I forgot how to act sweet and needy around my own parents.
