A volunteer who rescues strays and runs TNR work hauls a hundred-pound bag of discounted kibble home, only to be ambushed in her building by a new neighbor, Roger. He calls her cheap and cruel, kicks her down, and slashes the bag open with scissors, spilling dog food across the floor. She twists his arm, shows him the receipt, and makes him pay the $250 before he flees.

The next morning his wife blocks the hallway with a banner and hurls vile accusations, so the rescuer answers with a litter scoop. When Roger tries to join in, he gets a mouthful too, and she shuts their door on the mess.

Back inside, her cats line up at the litter box, and a fresh idea takes shape: if the couple loves it so much, she shouldn't be stingy.

I was carrying a heavy bag of dog food upstairs when my new neighbor, a short, stout man, blocked my path.

"You feed your dog this garbage? Do you even deserve a dog?"

"Why are you so lazy? You should be cooking for it with premium ingredients!"

"This is basically animal abuse. People like you, pretending to be virtuous, make me sick."

Before I could react, he slashed my bag of dog food open with a pair of scissors, spilling kibble everywhere.

"Consider this a warning," he sneered, turning to leave.
