From the back cover
When her parents divorced, Zoe was the middle child nobody fought for: her mother chose her older sister Grace, her father chose her younger brother Lucas, and Zoe was left to live alone on meager living expenses. Her parents, a surgeon and a cop, were always too "busy" for her, and she often went hungry, sometimes surviving on a single bun a day. From that hunger grew a hard resolve: money, not love, is what she can rely on.
Now the SAT registration fee is due, and Zoe still cannot reach her parents for the money. Her sister and brother post photos of gifts and coaching, proof their parents are not busy, only busy for her. At her mother's home she watches Grace share bird's nest soup, then is refused the fee and slapped; she smashes the bowl and leaves with only half the money, the rest owed by her father.
Across the city, her father sits in a muted living room so as not to disturb Lucas. Zoe still needs the other half, and the fight over her has only begun.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
I was the middle child, the one nobody wanted.
Everyone bet against me, but irony has a funny way of working out.
After the SATs, my sister ended up at a community college, my brother dropped out, and I? I was the state's top scholar.
Suddenly, it was my turn to be fought over.
I shook off their hands, pulling two documents from my bag.
"Kids who've been abandoned once have trust issues," I said coolly.
"So, here's the deal—"
"Whoever signs this will, leaving everything to me, gets to be the parent of the top scholar."
