On the day his wealthy wife Isabella Hawthorne reclaims her place among her own, Jacob Levy is quietly packing. She will take Julian and their daughter Mia to the Hawthorne estate and leave him behind in the Warrens with a small allowance. He does not fight her, because he has lived this before: framed for theft by Julian, then pushed from a balcony by Mia, and killed. This time he has been recruited by a classified national research agency, and in two days he must cut off all outside contact for five years.
But that night Julian and Isabella corner him with a stolen necklace, and the trap closes exactly as it did before. Isabella demands a confession; Mia begs him to admit it; the bodyguards force his head to the floor. When he still refuses, she has him dragged into the rain and then, at his hospital bedside, orders his fingers broken one by one.
His hands were his only way out.

I nodded calmly, without a fight.
