From the back cover
The night before her adopted sister Gemma's eighteenth birthday, Nora's family gathers to draw slips from a wish jar. Her father promises a car, her mother a European trip, her brother Garrett a designer purse, and Gavin, the neighbour she has quietly loved since seventh grade, is coaxed into singing. Then Gemma unfolds a blue slip written for Nora: she is to take the blame for Gemma's fireworks in the school science wing, which badly burned the night security proctor.
Nora signs the confession, believing it a mere disciplinary mark. By morning her early honours admission to Columbia is cancelled and the nomination rolls down to Gemma, while the county files felony charges against Nora. Overhearing her family's planning on the porch, she returns to the precinct and recants, naming Gemma as the one who lit the fuse.
Her parents and Garrett arrive furious, and her father admits he knew the fellowship would be revoked. Gavin only tells her she is tough enough to handle it. Then her teacher calls with a warning about her father's earlier questions.

1
The night before my adopted sister Gemma’s eighteenth birthday, my family gathered around the dining table to pull slips from her birthday wish jar.
It was supposed to be a game. Dad pulled a folded square of pastel paper and laughed, promising her a brand-new car. Mom drew an all-expenses-paid trip to Europe.
