Mia's mother runs a silk nightgown boutique beside a late-night foot spa parlor, opening only after dark and selling just ten pieces a night. Her gowns are outrageously expensive, and women swear that wearing one leaves their skin glowing and their complexion radiant. Yet Mom forbids her own daughters from ever touching them, and she leads favored clients down a concealed basement door into a pitch-black space where fittings last for hours and leave the women flushed and trembling.

When Mia's older sister Emily is dumped by her boyfriend Austin for being ugly, she begs for a gown so she can win him back. Mom flatly refuses and offers no explanation. Desperate, Emily drags Mia out of bed at midnight to steal one from the warehouse basement, determined to claim their mother's flawless face and curvy body for herself.

As Emily creeps down the dark stairs, a loud crash rings out from below, and her warning to Mia cuts off in a breathless gasp.
