His parents, who run the inn, refuse to accept his aquaphobia. His father drags him onto a speedboat and abandons him on the open ocean; his mother forces him to greet guests on the sand.

At nineteen, Jesse finds escape in perfumery, designing a sea-salt fragrance that wins him a contract as lead perfumer for a boutique brand in Boston. His mother cancels the agreement behind his back and pours his essential oils down the toilet. Tabitha steals his phone and sends a vicious voice note to Isla Burt, the one person who believed in his gift, and Isla blocks him.

Now his mother demands he wear a wetsuit and greet a surfing club on the shore, or leave the house for good. Jesse stands on the scorching sand, the waves closing in.

My mother forced me to stand on the damp sand to welcome the incoming surfers. I stood there, my limbs trembling so violently that before the guests’ shuttle even arrived, I fainted.
