Since before birth, Lynn has been fed a diet of tragic romance novels, leaving her with a severe case of paranoia. While other girls chased pretty dresses, she crawled in shadows with action cameras and voice recorders, certain someone meant to wrong her. At sixteen, no villainess had appeared—until her biological parents, the Blackwells, arrive in a luxurious car, and with them the imposter daughter, Serena.

On Serena's first day at the mansion, she slips a necklace into Lynn's pocket and accuses her of theft. As the family's eyes narrow, Lynn calmly produces three action cameras and offers to review the footage frame by frame. Her older brother, Mark Blackwell, insists Serena's character is beyond doubt, but the video shows Serena's hand at Lynn's pocket, a ruby between her fingers. Serena faints, and the family rushes her to the hospital.

Undaunted, Lynn installs cameras throughout Blackwell Manor and transfers to Kingston Academy, where Serena warns her off. There, Lynn hands out paternity test results to her new classmates, determined to face every scheme head-on.
