In Manhattan's upper crust, everyone knows Roman Kensington's wife, Paige, has an IQ of seventy-five. The mother is Valerie, a junior analyst whose Ivy League education Paige herself funded for seven years. Roman calls it a transaction, not an affair: he needs a brilliant heir for the Kensington empire, and he promises Paige's position as Mrs. Kensington will not change.

But Paige remembers the words Roman once shouted to save her from her abusive father: if your heart hurts, you walk away from the person hurting it. As he leaves to take Valerie to her appointment, forgetting Paige's birthday, she pulls off her wedding band. Roman warns she has nowhere to go and cannot survive alone. Paige must decide whether the man who once protected her has become the bad person she was taught to leave behind.
