Freya Sullivan arrives alone at her fiancé Marlin Lawrence's family home on their wedding day, as tradition demands, and knocks for her new mother-in-law to answer. No one opens. Instead, a printed card with a QR code slides through the crack: she must pay a greeting fee of ten thousand and one dollars first. She transfers it, and the door stays shut. Marlin's aunt then demands another five hundred thousand, or Freya will never set foot inside.

Marlin's childhood friend Roy urges her to comply, insisting Marlin will repay her later. She pays. The aunt finally appears, insults her gown and gold necklace, and lunges for the chain. When Freya catches her wrist, the aunt grabs a chair and swings it, then, the moment Marlin arrives, collapses into wailing lies, claiming the bride tried to force her to kneel. Roy backs the lie.

Freya gives Marlin one last chance, telling him exactly what his aunt demanded and asking whether he believes her. He pulls her aside and tells her to apologize so they don't miss the auspicious hour. She laughs coldly, her disappointment in him already dulled.
