From the back cover
A business trip is interrupted when a mother sees a video of her son, Emma Foster, sitting alone while other children exercise at his private activity center. When she explains that he has a congenital heart condition and recently had open-heart surgery, another parent, Mrs. Brown, demands $150,000 for her own daughter's medical bills and class fees. The mother refuses and threatens court, then returns home early and resolves to transfer Emma to a better activity center.
On his last day, Emma insists on attending a race to cheer for his best friend. Hours later, his heart monitor shows a rate of 163 beats per minute and climbing. The mother races to the center, where staff block her and the supervisor, Ms. Collins, claims Emma is resting in the nap room.
Breaking through, she finds a temporary pen on the field where a Rottweiler is chasing her collapsing son while adults laugh, film, and place bets. As she screams and charges forward, Mrs. Brown pins her to the ground, grinding a stiletto heel into her hand and reminding her of the warning she gave in the parent group chat.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
When I opened it, the parent group chat from my son’s private activity center had already exploded.
The latest video showed my son, Emma Foster, sitting alone under a tree by the sports field, quietly watching other kids running and playing.
Almost immediately, a parent commented under the video:
“Whose kid is this? Why is everyone else exercising while he’s just sitting there?”
I forced a polite smile at the client and quickly typed a reply.
