At sixteen, Alex travels with his sister Sarah Barnes to the remote mountains of Nectar Valley for a rural settlement program. Lodged with a young man nicknamed Nutty, whose real name is Nathan Walters, the siblings settle into village life. One day, while herding cattle, Alex falls asleep and wakes to thick fog and a voice calling him in Sarah's tone. Nutty pulls him away, warning that it is the Temptress, a spider-like creature that mimics human voices to lure victims to their deaths.

Back home, Nutty gives Alex an amulet and strict instructions: bolt the door and answer no one. But soon a voice outside mimics Sarah, then Nutty himself, begging to be let in. Peering through a crack, Alex sees a stiff, unnatural figure. As the false Nutty pounds and kicks at the door, Alex and Sarah block it, terrified. The real Nutty has gone to fetch his uncle, the folk healer Peter Walters, but he has not returned.

Trapped inside with an amulet and their fear, the siblings can only wonder: where is the real Nutty, and will Peter arrive before the Temptress finds a way in?

In my drowsy state, I hear strange panting and gasps. Thick fog has somehow risen throughout the forest by the time I wake up.
