My boyfriend is the Police Captain. When I was cornered by criminals, I calmly called his work phone three times.

When he finally answered, all I received was his impatient scolding: “Stop bothering me. I'm on duty, and you're disrupting my work.”

In the noisy background, I heard Violetta's playful voice: “Thank you, brother, you're amazing!”

With a criminal's knife close to my throat, I didn't have the luxury of arguing with him. I quickly dialed 91

The dispatcher regretfully informed me: “All nearby units are handling other emergencies. It will take some time to reach you. I'll coordinate as fast as I can.”

In a daze, I saw a news alert about the Police Captain successfully rescuing a kidnapped girl.

If I remember correctly, this was the fifth time Violetta was in danger.

Desperate, I looked at the criminals around me, then at the open window. Faced with the choice between being killed or jumping, I chose the latter.

A second before I fell, I sent my last text message:

[I'm leaving. I wish you happiness. Don't bother, don't miss.]

I saw my body lying on the ground like a shattered doll.

Even though I was already lifeless, my face still showed a longing to live.

A blood-stained handkerchief slipped from my hand, marked with signs of fighting the criminals.

My right arm was twisted horribly, with bones piercing through the skin, and blood staining the ground.

So, I was already dead.

Twenty minutes earlier, I was kidnapped by criminals on my way home.

They took me to the fifth floor of this remote factory and seized my spare phone before guarding the door outside.

I tried to stay calm, looking for a way to escape.

My boyfriend, Finnick, is the Police Captain. I learned some methods from him to handle danger.

I secretly pressed the speed dial on my phone, calling Finnick.

“The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.”

The cold message came through the receiver.

I checked; the number I dialed was his work phone.

When Finnick gave me this number, he promised solemnly:

“Serena, this is my work phone. Call me whenever you're in danger, and I'll answer.”

“No one else will call this number.”

“This is our code. As soon as you call, I'll rush to your side.”

I had already dialed 911.

But I hesitated and called Finnick again.

Simply because my area was under his jurisdiction, and the task might fall to him in the end.

Maybe contacting him directly would get me help faster.

The waiting tone lingered in my ear.

Until I heard Finnick's annoyed voice.

“I'm busy! What's up, say it quick!”

I realized I had dialed his number for the third time.

This time was unconscious.

I bit my lip hard to wake myself up a bit, and struggled to say, “Finnick, I've been kidnapped. Can you come save…”

Before I could finish, he cut me off mercilessly: “Serena, stop it. I don't have time for you now.”

“I'm on duty. Violetta just faced danger, and I need to protect her.”

Among the background noise, Violetta's weak voice came through: “Brother Finnick, I'm so scared. Luckily, you're here.”
