Really, just on duty?
I questioned Finnick in my heart, and I questioned myself.
In the past year, Finnick's work phone often rang late at night.
He always left in a hurry, saying it was an emergency task.
I thought he was just busy with work.
Until I noticed that every time, Violetta's name flashed on the screen.
A woman's intuition told me something was wrong.
I secretly checked Finnick's call records.
There were very few calls related to work.
In contrast, Violetta's name filled the screen.
My boyfriend of three years, always there for another woman whenever she needed him.
And at my moment of crisis, my only call for help was seen as a nuisance.
How ironic!
The dial tone echoed in my ear.
Finnick hung up on me.
The criminal's knife danced before my eyes.
While I still had a shred of sanity, I hurriedly called the police.
As I expected, the dispatcher confirmed the address and transferred the task to the police station where Finnick worked.
“What? Everyone is out? And so far away, why not assign someone closer!”
“Nonsense! Captain Finnick would never make such an unreasonable arrangement!”
I didn't know what response he received, but he seemed angry, and his tone became urgent.
Suddenly, the dispatcher's voice was cut off.
He must have realized I could hear and pressed mute.
Not long after, he picked up the phone again and regretfully informed me: “Sorry, ma'am, all nearby units are handling other emergencies. Please try to stay calm, and I'll coordinate other rescue personnel as soon as possible.”
My head was getting dizzier.
I quickly asked, “How long will it take? I'm afraid I can't hold on much longer.”
The dispatcher carefully chose his words:
“The rescue team has already set out. They'll get there as soon as possible, but you're in a remote area, so it might take some time. Please be patient.”
He then gave some advice on dealing with the criminals.
I helplessly looked at my surroundings, at my phone, and at the bag that the criminals had taken.
I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd tried all that.
In a daze, I saw a news alert about the Police Captain successfully rescuing a kidnapped girl.
I laughed sarcastically.
If I remember correctly, this was the fifth time Violetta had been in danger.
I've grown tired of hearing this excuse.
A month ago, I had a huge argument with Finnick.
It was my birthday that day.
I had prepared dinner meticulously, waiting for Finnick to come home.
The table was filled with his favorite dishes, all cooked by me.
Candles were lit on the cake, a surprise I'd planned for him.
Yet, Finnick never showed up.
I didn't know if he had forgotten or simply didn't care.
Two hours later, Finnick sent a text: [Sorry, I have a task. I'll be back when I'm done.]
He didn't come home the entire night.
At three in the morning, Violetta updated her Snapchat.
[Every time I'm in danger, Brother Finnick is there to protect me. I'm so happy.]
