During her senior-year internship, Louise Henson's father is hospitalized for surgery. Her boyfriend Otis Gilbert promises to handle everything, but when she arrives at the hospital she finds him holding his childhood sweetheart, Lucinda Swanson, in his arms. He tells Lucinda she has always been his only girlfriend and that everything with other people is just for show.

Louise says nothing. She plays along, hides what she saw, and quietly moves her father to a room with hired caregivers. Then she turns to the contract between her firm and Otis's company and writes her assessment: insufficient qualifications, no industry experience, a background check recommended.

That night, a new follower appears on her phone: Lucinda, posting videos of herself with Otis. Louise no longer loves him, and she is done bending for him.
