For seven years, Miles has been the top-producing loan officer at his branch, yet every annual review stamps him with the same verdict: contractor status, ineligible for grading. The Branch Manager, Cole, keeps promising that full-time conversion is only a matter of time, while Todd and the other staff treat him as hired help who does not even count among the branch's twenty-eight employees.

When the holiday bonuses arrive, twenty-seven gift baskets for twenty-eight people, Miles finally stops believing the promise. He prints his resignation letter, endures the staffing agency's mockery, and lines up an interview for a full-time Senior Loan Officer role elsewhere.

Back at the bank, he refuses Todd's dumped files and speaks his mind at last, and Manager Cole summons him into her office to answer for it.
