Evelyn Reed has spent years married to Theodore Thorne, a man who will not hold their child, ignores her career, and refuses to acknowledge her publicly. That night belongs to Seraphina Claudio, the violinist whose London opening Theodore flew across the ocean to attend. In a televised interview, Seraphina thanks a friend she has known for many years, and the comments decide it is Theodore, the lost love of his youth. Evelyn, alone in the maternity ward, finally asks him for a divorce.

Theodore arrives, apologetic and businesslike, arranging a press release and donations for the Thorne Industries heiress, but he still will not take his daughter in his arms. Evelyn names the baby Hope and tells him to leave.
