At dinner, George Radcliffe tells his wife, Jennifer Hathaway, that their maid Kristen Pattinson deserves a raise of one hundred thousand a month, a three-month year-end bonus, four days off after every three worked, full insurance and health coverage for her whole family. Jennifer, heir to the Hathaway family, sees through the sudden generosity and tells him to fire Kristen instead, or they divorce.

George refuses and turns on her, mocking the medical career he sponsored and the hospital position he arranged. Kristen, a divorced single mother of five sons, steps in with soft, wounded words, while Jennifer recalls the pillow in George's study and the phone wallpaper that resemble her. When Jennifer accuses him of wanting Kristen for her sons, George admits he is infertile and begs her to keep it quiet.

After George shields Kristen from a thrown vase, Jennifer orders them both out of her house, leaving the marriage on the edge of collapse.

He frowned slightly. “Haven’t you noticed? She’s a single mother with five sons, her father’s a gambler, and her mother is sick with cancer.”

I glanced at Kristen Pattinson, dressed in her maid uniform and black stockings, as she bent over to mop the floor, her curves exposed in the dim light.

Before I could speak, he cleared his throat, his tone serious.

“I want to give her a raise, one hundred thousand a month.”
