From the back cover

At eighteen, Maya Evans gives up her acceptance to a top-tier university to work and help her family pay off their debts. Then, on a bus, she sees her father Richard Evans on the financial news — no longer a simple blue-collar worker, but the sharp-suited CEO of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate, announcing that her trial has failed and the group will pass to Valerie Evans.

At home, her mother Eleanor Evans, now dressed as a high-society woman, tells her coldly that eighteen years of poverty were only a trial to choose an heir, and that Maya has disappointed them. Her sacrifices were shortsightedness; the mother-daughter bond was merely examination. When Richard arrives with Valerie, he strips Maya of her inheritance rights and offers to send her abroad as a final kindness.

Maya refuses. She will stay and live on her own — but her card is already frozen, her balance zero.

The simple blue-collar worker I knew transformed into the sharp-suited CEO of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate.

“I announce that Maya Evans’ trial has failed. The group will be inherited by Valerie Evans.”

I walked home in a daze.
