Begonia Hudson has barely recovered from a month of confinement when her husband, Donald Inksworth, confesses a long-hidden crime. Five years earlier, he and his foster sister, Jolene Trafford, conspired with Jolene's husband, Levi Sinclair, to lock Begonia away and violate her until she conceived a child meant to secure Jolene's place as Mrs. Sinclair. Donald also admits he caused the miscarriage of Begonia's first child, a seven-month-old son, by smearing shoe polish at the top of the stairs.

Donald insists a new baby, Harold, and his care should be enough to erase the past, and he threatens divorce if Begonia cannot behave. At Harold's one-month celebration, Jolene arrives with Benjamin, a boy who resembles Levi yet has Begonia's eyes, and deliberately torments her. When Begonia lunges at Jolene, Donald kicks her in the stomach, reopening her barely healed wounds. Then smoke floods the room, and someone shouts that the house is on fire.
