When Claire and her husband Marcus both fall ill, they go to the hospital together for checkups. The doctor calls Claire in alone with the results: Marcus has ALS. Devastated, she vows to sell everything they own to give him a few more good years.

At home, Marcus urges her not to treat the illness, insisting the disease is a bottomless pit and that their son Jamie's college fund and future must come first. He says that if he were the sick one, he would refuse treatment rather than drag the family down. Claire agrees not to treat it, but Marcus has not looked closely at the name on the report.

When Marcus claims his father is hospitalized, Claire follows his phone location to a bar, where he is hosting a party for his new secretary, Vivian. After he slaps her and asks for a divorce, Claire learns their savings and house have been arranged to leave her with almost nothing.

My husband glanced at the report and clearly saw the three words: ALS diagnosis.

He didn't say anything. When we got home, he cooked me an elaborate dinner.

After we ate, he looked at me seriously.

"Claire, we still have to pay for Jamie's college. This disease is a bottomless pit, and there's no cure. Maybe we shouldn't treat it."

I stared at him in shock.

He continued:

"If I were the one who was sick, I definitely wouldn't get treatment either. I couldn't let myself drag down the whole family."

"Claire, I hope you understand."

Of course I understood him.
