From the back cover
Jade chose Mike because he was the one man in their circle who came without a warning label: sober, restrained, a safe bet. Then, at the company gala, the man who prided himself on his boundaries drank himself into the ER on behalf of his new assistant, Lexi. Jade said nothing. She lined up the cellar bottles, kept appearing at his side, and let the rules shatter quietly.
When a crisis at her own firm makes her late to the next gala, she finds Lexi clinging to Mike's arm while he toasts on her behalf. Lexi, a new Executive Assistant, mistakes Jade for a kept wife and mocks her in front of the room. Miller corrects her: Jade is the sole heiress to the Kensington empire, and even Mike's mother treats her with kid gloves. Mike only ruffles Lexi's hair and asks her to apologize.
Jade leaves for the Kensington gala, and Mike soon lands in the hospital again, drinking every glass meant for Lexi. At his bedside she hears him tell Lexi he did it because he wanted to. Jade walks away without opening the door.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
I chose Mike because he was the only man in our circle who didn’t come with a warning label.
He was the anomaly—he didn’t smoke, he rarely drank, and he possessed a sense of boundaries that was almost architectural in its precision. In a world of men who treated infidelity like a corporate perk, Mike was the "Safe Bet."
But at our company’s annual gala, the man who prided himself on sobriety ended up in the ER because he’d spent the night drinking on behalf of his new assistant.
