On the night before the Northbridge Graduate Admissions Exam, Mason's aunt Brenda changes his flight so he must escort her daughter Kayla to Bellhaven instead. When he protests, his father urges him to put family first, while his mother reminds them that Mason studied for a year and paid the registration fee himself. Brenda, who built Sawyer Building Supply after Mason's father once emptied the family savings to save her, waves his exam away and swaggers off with Kayla.

Mason agrees to the trip, and Brenda hands him a bank card she monitors and warns him not to spend a cent on himself. Kayla, ten years old and spoiled, torments a stranger at the airport and pours juice over a woman named Ms. Whitlock on the plane. Mason films it all, apologizes helplessly, and quietly lets Kayla do as she pleases, telling her she is doing excellent work.

He has decided to repay Brenda's kindness in his own way, and the journey has only begun.
