Cassie has spent three years caring for her husband Scott, who claims to suffer from intermittent amnesia. He forgets her birthday, her severe seafood allergy, and every word she says, yet he never forgets a thing for his childhood best friend, Taryn. When Cassie, pregnant after two years of grueling fertility treatments, calls him from the hospital with news of a threatened miscarriage, she overhears Scott and Taryn laughing on the other end of the line. His amnesia, they joke, is a game they have played at her expense all along.

Cassie ends the call without a sound. She tells the doctor she does not want the child and asks for the surgery, then reaches out to her former university advisor about an East African field research position. Returning home, she finds Scott and Taryn's old clique gathered in her living room, laughing as Scott claims he cannot remember ever driving across town for her or waiting in line for her almond pastries. Since he chooses to forget, she decides there is no longer any need for her to speak.
