From the back cover
Locked in the trunk of her family's car under the scorching sun, Mia pounds on the lid and screams for her father, Arthur, and her mother, Eleanor. They are outside, laughing and taking pictures of her little brother, Leo, and they refuse to let her out. Her father calls her a brat who tried to harm his son and says she deserves to stew in there, while her mother stays silent.
Mia presses a teddy bear that plays a recording of her own voice, but her father only roars at her to be quiet. Heat and fear overwhelm her, and she slips out of her body, invisible to everyone. At the villa, her aunt Brenda Evans urges her father to get rid of the girl who brings bad luck to Leo, and the family sits down to dinner, leaving the car locked in the yard.
All night, Mia watches her parents sleep as if they have forgotten her. The next morning, her father notices a strange smell near the car but walks away without investigating, while the family celebrates Leo's recovery and plans to discipline her further.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
I was locked in the trunk, the scorching air burning my throat.
Every breath felt like swallowing a ball of fire, stifling and painful.
I regretted it. I shouldn't have put that blanket on Leo.
I pounded on the trunk lid, my palms hitting the burning metal, producing dull thuds and searing pain.
"Dad! Mom! I'm sorry! Let me out!"
