After six years in an orphanage, Rainie finally comes home to her biological mother. But the child is distant and fearful, and when her mother is about to leave on a business trip, she suddenly hears her daughter's thoughts: Daisy hits her, her father says her mother dislikes tattling children, and in a previous life she died before ever feeling her mother's embrace. The trip is abandoned on the spot.

At home, Daisy, the girl mistakenly raised in Rainie's place, tears Rainie's clothes and plays the victim, while the nanny Martha questions the mother's judgment and warns that the man of the house should decide. Julian, her husband, has told Rainie that her mother is frightening and does not want to see her. The mother begins to wonder what her husband is hiding.

At the school, Rainie's name is missing from the enrollment list, and the principal speaks of an illegitimate child unworthy of the family's shares. The mother refuses to let anyone harm her daughter again.
