Savannah Harper lives inside a story, bound to a Taskkeeper Program that promised she could return home if she saved her mother from domestic abuse. Instead, her mother recoils from her, because Savannah's face carries the blood of her abusive father, Thomas Harper. When Savannah shields her from his blows, her mother pushes her away and calls her disgusting.

Savannah works at Uncle Jerry's Smokehouse and pays the rent, the groceries, and the debts of her older half-sister Felicity Archer, who is repeating her senior year for the third time. Her mother spends the money on Felicity and insists Savannah owes her everything. Then the system tells Savannah her father has drunk himself to death, and she is free to leave.

Savannah stops sacrificing herself. She cooks pancakes for her own birthday and hands over her last money without a word. Her mother, suddenly uncertain, begins to panic.
