Lucy Thompson wakes on the day her boyfriend Tom Shaw is scrambling to borrow money for his university friend Sophie White, whose gambling father left her hounded by loan sharks over a debt of more than eight million pounds. Lucy remembers another life: she gave Tom her savings on the condition that he stop helping Sophie, Sophie then took sleeping pills, and one drunken night Tom forced Lucy to swallow a bottle of sleeping pills too, blaming her cold heart for Sophie's death.

Now Lucy refuses to ask her wealthy parents for money. Tom accuses her of being heartless and walks out to Sophie's house; Lucy ends the relationship, blocks him and returns to her parents, who had cut her off for choosing him. Sophie posts a photo of Tom comforting her, then sends Lucy a guilt-laden apology.

Lucy will not be drawn back in this time, and with her best friend Chloe she begins to reclaim the life she lost.
