From the back cover

At a party on the eve of her wedding, Norma finally asks her fiancé Justin where her dog actually went. His girl best friend Bridget answers for him, joking drunkenly that she ate him and that he tasted tender because Norma raised him well. The room laughs, and Justin only silences Bridget when the jokes go too far. When Norma pulls Bridget upright, a crash follows and Bridget falls bleeding to the floor. Justin screams for an ambulance and turns on Norma, blaming her for the blow to Bridget's head.

Months earlier, Norma had left Winston, her Bichon Frise, in Justin's care during a business trip; he claimed the dog slipped out the door and vanished. Now Bridget's earlier remarks about pampered dog meat and Justin's rigid silence knit into a suspicion Norma can no longer ignore. She drives to the townhouse they were to move into after the wedding and destroys it with a chef's knife while his parents watch. Justin's only concern is Bridget, and he demands that Norma come to the hospital and apologize.

Norma agrees to come, but Justin grows cautious on the line.

She flashed a bright, mocking smile. "Look, it’s just a dog, right? Tomorrow is your wedding.
