For six years Kerry has been the stepmother of Cronan, the son of her late foster sister Evie, married to Hurley Beckham as repayment for the kindness of Willa, who raised her. When the family finally takes its first portrait, Cronan turns away in disgust, wishing aloud that Liv, who resembles his real mother, had been in the picture instead. Hurley only tells Kerry to be more understanding.

Cronan strikes her with a feather duster and accuses her of complaining to Willa; Hurley sides with the boy, and Liv, who has free access to the house, scolds Kerry as though she were the intruder. Watching Hurley share Liv's spoon and eat her undercooked soup, Kerry sees that the two of them simply have no heart for her.

With only one day left before the six-year agreement frees her, Kerry decides to leave Hurley and his son behind.

Kerry’s POV

In the sixth year of marrying into the Beckhams as a stepmother, we finally took our very first family portrait.

When the photo was developed, I was overjoyed and hurried to show it to my son.

But he turned his head away in disgust.

“Honestly, you’re embarrassing,” he muttered.

My hand, which had been about to hang the picture, froze in midair.

“And you don’t even understand when people are being kind to you,” he added coldly.

Before I could react, he went on speaking to himself.
