At a New Year's Eve party, someone swaps Ethan's pineapple juice for beer on the very day he has taken antibiotics. He barely survives the hospital rush, but when he wakes, his wife Chloe shields the culprit. She calls the man a kid fresh out of college and begs Ethan to be the bigger person, even as Ethan recognizes him as the man who has been far too close to her.
Chloe refuses to let Ethan call the police, offering only to dock the man's pay for three days. When Sam arrives with a fruit basket, tears and a staged apology, Chloe takes his side, slaps Ethan, and threatens him. Sam flees, Chloe chases him, and her social media post promises to protect him forever.
Ethan returns home to find the shower running and another man in the house.

I barely made it after they rushed me to the hospital. When I came to, my wife, Chloe, was shielding the guy who did it.
"Let this go, Ethan. Be the bigger person. He didn't mean it."
I wasn't about to let this guy—the one who'd been way too close to my wife for comfort—off the hook. Chloe cut me off, frowning.
"Enough! He just graduated, he’s just a kid who doesn’t know any better. Why are you picking on him?"
"Do you have to ruin his life to be happy?"
Seeing her defend him like that, my heart turned to ash.
"Then maybe you two should be together."
