From the back cover

Elliott once treated Daphne like something precious, shielding her from the sun because her albinism makes sunlight an open flame to her skin. Then Tess, his childhood best friend, returns from London, and his care begins to slip away.

When Tess lures Daphne into a glass conservatory at noon and bolts the door, Daphne burns for seventeen minutes while Elliott waits, testing how long she can last. At the hospital, he keeps choosing Tess, even draping his coat over her instead of his burned wife.

Daphne lies on the exam table, the ointment cold on her blistered back, and begins to see what his love was really worth.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

When Elliott first pursued me, he liked to tell people I was an angel who had tumbled down to earth.

The truth was far less poetic. I was born with oculocutaneous albinism. My skin possessed virtually no melanin; sunlight wasn't warmth to me, but an open flame. While other couples checked the weather for rain, Elliott checked the UV index. The windows of his car were sealed with the thickest ceramic thermal tint money could buy, and whenever we stepped outdoors in the summer, his broad, dark umbrella was already open above my head.
