After her sister Ashley Pedersen stabs her during a robbery attempt, Evelyn is left bleeding in a deserted alley. Her mother, Linda Pedersen, an auxiliary police officer, arrives but ignores her injuries, brands her the aggressor, and rushes Ashley—barely scratched—to the hospital. Evelyn dies alone, and when news of her death arrives, Linda dismisses it as another lie.

Evelyn then finds herself a spectral witness as Linda fusses over Ashley's hospital bed, calling Evelyn a selfish liar and a stunt-puller. Ashley plays the gracious victim, while Linda recalls kicking and abandoning Evelyn in the alley, refusing to believe she was dying. Even at a family feast, Linda dials Evelyn's number to prove her control, only to meet silence.

Long before, Ashley had blamed Evelyn for every misdeed, and Linda's love curdled into control. Now, after months away, Linda is summoned by the police station, the case closed but protocols lingering.
