When a fire traps her stepson Lucas Lincoln in an abandoned warehouse, his stepmother calls the fire brigade and then her husband, Jasper Lincoln, leader of a search-and-rescue team. But Jasper is out celebrating ex-wife Yvonne Schmidt's Forensic Doctor of the Year award, and he rejects every call. By the time the flames are quelled, Lucas is dead.

Jasper believes the boy who died is Noah Green, the son his wife had with her ex-husband, and he is glad. He orders the corpse sent to Yvonne's public lecture as a dissection specimen, and Yvonne thanks Ms. Rayne for donating Noah's body to science. Only the stepmother knows the charred body on the operating table is Lucas, Jasper and Yvonne's own son.

As Yvonne pours antiseptic over the cadaver before the cameras, the truth waits beneath the white sheet.

My stepson, Lucas Lincoln, is trapped in a fire. After calling the fire brigade, I quickly ring my husband, Jasper Lincoln. Jasper is the leader of a search-and-rescue team, after all.

But to my dismay, Jasper is currently keeping his ex-wife, Yvonne Schmidt, company. Yvonne has won the "Forensic Doctor of the Year" award, and so they are out celebrating it.

My phone calls are rejected again and again. Jasper never once calls me back, even after Lucas' cries for help disappear entirely.
