After a brutal childbirth, Clara wakes to find her newborn daughter has been switched. Her husband Brayton dismissed the midwife and maids to attend his cousin Lillian, and Lillian's maid Celeste carried the infants away. Clara's handmaid Ruby had marked the true baby's heel with rouge, but the mark vanished. Clara, still weak, follows Celeste through empty corridors and finds her own daughter abandoned in a filthy cradle outside Lillian's rooms. She switches the babies back, then overhears Brayton and Lillian: the child is theirs, and Brayton has been drugging Clara's water to make her barren. Clara returns to her rooms, orders every pot and pan scrubbed clean, and resolves to watch the twisted drama unfold.
