Five years ago, Sylvester caught his wife, the university professor Mindy Holmes, in an affair with Henry Bale, her teaching assistant. She begged him not to expose Henry, and he agreed on two conditions: Henry would leave the city and never return, and Mindy signed an agreement to leave the marriage with nothing if she were ever unfaithful again. She swore he was the only man she loved.

Now, on a business trip, Sylvester finds a lost girl and takes her to a police station. The child is Yvette Holmes, and the woman who rushes in to collect her is Mindy. She has kept Henry and their daughter nearby, paying their way while professing her devotion to Sylvester.

When Yvette falls ill, Mindy leaves Sylvester to go to her, and he tells her that once she walks away, they are finished. He then turns to her father, Shawn Holmes, who already knew and urges him to protect the family's reputation.
