From the back cover

Harper feeds only one of the two stray cats at the family's apartment complex, and when her father asks why, she says the male cat deserves to starve because males are trash — except for him. Her mother, Linda, laughs it off as a phase, and the father lets it slide.

Then Harper comes home sobbing that Caleb Vance, her bus driver, blocked the aisle and touched her, and four other girls on the bus. The parents march to the precinct, and Caleb is arrested, charged and sentenced to five years. He insists he is innocent, and his bedridden mother, Martha, begs for help. The father begins to doubt his daughter's story.

As the case goes national and Martha takes her own life, a message on Harper's iPad forces the father to confront what really happened on that bus.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

But I noticed something odd: she only fed one of them. She completely ignored the other.

In fact, I once caught her sneaking down to kick over the second cat’s bowl if a neighbor had left food out for it.
