In her first life, Rachel died because she tried to keep the peace. Her sister-in-law Molly moved in preaching extreme ahimsa, forbidding meat, swatting, and pest control, and secretly feeding the mice and cockroaches. When Rachel, eight months pregnant, gently asked her to leave, Molly wept on livestreams, an online mob doxed Rachel, and a rat Molly had fed bit her ankle. She contracted rat-bite fever, miscarried, and died, while Molly called it cosmic karma.
Rachel wakes on the very day Molly began feeding the cockroaches. This time she puts her husband Todd in the middle, but he and his mother Helen side with Molly, and Helen threatens to jump from the window rather than let the neighbors talk. When Rachel tries to leave, the hallway crowd turns on her, and an elderly neighbor seizes her ID card so she cannot check into a hotel.
Then Todd comes home to a glass of water with a dead fly in it and roaches crawling from his rice. The house is a dump, and the family that fed the rats must now face what they have bred.
