On their third wedding anniversary, Natalie waits alone at a table set for two. Ethan, her husband, is elsewhere, tending to Vivian, a woman who says she is afraid of thunder. When Natalie calls, he calls her cruel and hangs up.

At the hospital for her own stomach condition, Natalie watches Ethan carry Vivian in and stay by her side. Outside the VIP room she hears him say that a wife who cannot tolerate Vivian does not deserve her place. When she confronts him, he drags her out, and her knee strikes the door frame.

She tells him she spent the night alone on an IV. He sees the bruise on her hand, and his panic turns to irritation.
