Niels Pattinson is paralyzed after pushing his wife Queenie Jorian out of the path of a drunk driver. Years later, Queenie holds a knife to their young son Leroy's neck, demanding that Niels donate a kidney to her friend Francis Show, who is in kidney failure. She insists the kidney is useless to a paralyzed man.

What she does not know is that Niels already lost one kidney saving her, and the doctors never told her because she was pregnant at the time. Niels agrees to the surgery to protect Leroy, and Queenie follows the organ out without a backward glance, refusing to believe the doctors when his remaining kidney is found to be missing and his life slips away.

As Queenie tends to Francis and dismisses the calls about her husband, Leroy is left sobbing at his father's bedside.
