When Cora Shepard's husband George Lambert abandons her for his first love Kimberly Hayes for the ninth time, the wager she signed with Kimberly is lost. Left on a rain-soaked highway, Cora walks five hours to Clearwater Bay villa, where Kimberly greets her with a smile and a reminder that George loves her most. Cora accepts defeat and agrees to divorce George.
Cora and Kimberly were once college roommates. Cora fell for George at Kimberly's birthday party, and Kimberly, who never wanted him, pushed them together. After three years of a calm marriage, Kimberly returned from abroad and made Cora sign a wager: if George abandons her nine times, she must give him back.
Cora signs the divorce papers and hands them to Kimberly, who has George sign without looking. As Cora prepares to live only for herself, George remains unaware of what he has signed.

The ninth time it happened, George Lambert abandoned Cora Shepard on the highway just because his first love called.
"Cora, something urgent came up. I need to go. You can get out here and take a cab home, right?"
Without waiting for her answer, he shoved an umbrella into her hands. He did not care that it was pouring outside or that she was on her period.
