Sophia Judd and her twin sister Melody are identical in face and body. Because Sophia was in the wrong position at birth and delayed the delivery, Melody was deprived of oxygen and grew up frail. From then on, Sophia became her sister's test subject: when Melody craves peanuts despite her allergy, their mother forces them into Sophia's mouth; when Melody fears scarring from pierced ears, their mother puts more than twenty holes through Sophia's ears.

On the twins' eighteenth birthday, Melody suddenly wants to learn to swim. Their mother shoves Sophia into the sea to try it first. When Sophia begs for help, her mother kicks her, forces her head under, and calls her selfish for the complications at birth. Melody laughs from the shore while their parents watch.

Sophia drowns. Her spirit drifts back to shore, unseen, as her family eats and speaks of her with contempt. When Melody returns in tears claiming Sophia slapped her, their father swears to break her arms. Sophia can only stand there, already dead.
