At dinner, Madison kicks her brother Riley across the room when he claims a girl doesn't deserve the chicken leg. Pinned under her foot, he admits that Derek Walsh, Marcus and Jason have tormented him at school, calling him worse than a girl and pulling down his pants. Her parents vow to speak to his homeroom teacher, and her father insists that in their family, boys and girls are equal.

The next afternoon, Derek and his crew corner Madison in the hallway, furious that her parents complained. When he threatens her, she wrenches his finger and drops him to the ground, warning him to leave Riley alone. Her classmates pour out to shield her, and a brawl nearly erupts.

Then Ms. Victoria Smith, her homeroom teacher, arrives and slaps Madison, accusing her of manipulating boys. Remembering her father's words that she must never lose a fight, Madison smashes a potted plant into the teacher's face. Blood streams down, the hallway erupts, and the principal is summoned to confront a student everyone now calls out of control.

Without thinking, I kicked out.

He went flying, chair and all, crashing to the floor.

Mom and Dad dropped their forks in shock.

Before Riley could get up, I planted my foot on his chest.

Pinned to the ground, he stared up at me, stunned silent.

"Where did you learn to talk like that?"

His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

I pressed down harder with my foot."Who taught you that?"
